Shouldn't a doctor tell the truth, instead of worrying about his time?

Doctors should have a great bed-side manner, and while they should tell the truth, they need to be aware of what impact their comments may have on the patient. They can be straight-forward and be compassionate also. While their time is important, so are the patients and the patient deserves enough time with the doctor to get the info that they need. You were smart to not go back to that doctor. Good for you.
