Are common landscaping “Red” lava rocks aquarium safe?

i wanna make a 3d backround by silicone glueing the rocks to a sheet of acrylic glass so i can remove it. the rocks come in a bag..are they safe in large amounts? i have african cichlids and they benefit from high ph.
